Why professional photography of your products is so important
The simplest answer is your products are everything (unless you are selling services like I do). Your business would not exist without your products so it is important to present them in most attractive manner possible.
I have always had wild success selling my unused junk around the house on ebay, and I know exactly why… it’s because my photographs do all the work. Great photos can even make an ordinary product look extraordinary. On a few occasions I have been a little sorry handing a item over to an ebay buyer because it looked so much better in the photo than they did in real life and they may have paid more than I would consider reasonable because they have romanticized the product. I certainly didn’t mislead them in any obscene way or touch up the photos so it didn’t resemble the original product, all I did was make the product the true hero of the shot. I have sold products on ebay where the identical product has been available from another seller (usually with a bad photo), and people bid on mine and not the other. I have watched this happen many many times.
When a person is looking at your product photos it is safe to assume they do not have a demo of the product in front of them. The photograph must tell the entire story and leave the person wanting it. It is fantastic to have a great business “image” but don’t for one second think that this is enough, you must follow through on decent photographs and not leave it up to the imagination of the viewer, for chances are they will see the same or similar product elsewhere, and it will look glorious and they will buy it there.
For example, think about the same product in two different brochures. Identical products, identical prices. One brochure has a professional, clean photograph and the other has amateurish photograph – it could be washed out, out of focus, bluish, bad perspective etc. Chances are you are going to go with the first option, psychologically that is what you want, you have embellished the product in your imagination.
On a stranger note customers often think that when purchasing from the shoddier looking catalogue their purchase may not be well looked after in inventory, perhaps it may be scratched, old, dirty etc. They extend their vision of the photo into your entire practice, they think of you as shabby.
